“HUMANISTA”
What to Expect When You Pursue HUMSS By: Jerome Montecalvo
The Senior High School education under the K-12 curriculum is on its third year of implementation. The University of San Carlos offers Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) among other strands and tracks. Here’s a quick rundown on what lies ahead of you.
The Class
As of this writing (SY. 2018-2019), HUMSS is offered in the University of San Carlos – South Campus in J. Alcantara St., Brgy. Sambag I, Cebu city. Students are organized in block sections with an average of 35 students each. Classrooms are currently located on the 5th floor (!) of the TS building. In USC, the school year starts on August; the first semester ends on December. The second semester lasts from the month of January to May.

The Subject
The University of San Carlos (USC) follows the Senior High School curriculum under the HUMSS strand as mandated by the Department of Education. As a Catholic Institution, USC has two additional subjects: Religious Education, and Carolinian Character Formation (CCF). HUMSS offers specialized subjects including World Religion and Social Sciences and the Disciplines.
The Students
HUMSS students in USC are unique and diverse. They all come from different provinces and walks of life. Prepare to mingle with passionate, outspoken, and creative individuals who share similar interests. Students are expected to wear complete school uniform during weekdays except on Wednesdays. Known as “Wash Day,” Wednesdays allow students to wear civilian attire provided they adhere to the dress code and wear the student ID at all times.
Research

Of course, a HUMSS student’s life wouldn’t be complete without research. Unlike STEM or ABM, HUMSS focuses on non-experimental qualitative or quantitative research design. For the second semester of SY.2018-2019, Grade 11 students were required to conduct a phenomenological study and a correlation study using a survey. Research 01 is fully introduced during the second semester of Grade 11 and continues with Research 02 on Grade 12. Students usually work in groups of four and five under a research adviser.
School Activities
With all the academic requirements and research on their plate, HUMSS students could definitely chill and relax by looking forward to school activities. Carousel – the annual Senior High School acquaintance party – is a large interstrand event you can definitely look forward to. Organized by the Student Council, Carousel boasts talent shows, food booths, fun game fairs and activities. Other school activities definitely worth looking forward to is the week long Intramurals, and the Lit Film Fest.
So there you have it! Studying HUMSS in USC can be challenging but definitely exciting and worth the experience.
“ON SPORT TO SUPPORT “
(How it Changed the Way I look at Intramurals) By: Kyla Depakakibo

I came to USC Downtown campus for one purpose only: to see the Senior High School Volleyball Women Team play in the Intrams, and have my photo taken as a Performance Task (PT) under PE. Each class was assigned to watch two games under one sport event. I expected to stay for a game or two, maybe have some snacks to make things interesting. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised to discover l sincerely enjoyed their games.
Though there were few of us in class that day, we tried to show our support by chanting “Let’s go SHS!” The SHS Volleyball Women team were leading in the first set against the School of Pharmacy .However, the latter managed to beat them in the second set with a close margin of 25-23. The third set was intense. Everyone was on the edge of their plastic seats. I for one, was covering my mouth in anticipation. et the SHS team didn’t back down. That Monday, October 21, 2018, the SHS Volleyball Women’s team won the game. I went home giddy with excitement. This was their third consecutive win against previous college teams. What could possibly go wrong?
I wonder what must be on the players’ minds. However, I’d like to end this reflection on a positive note. Life – like volleyball – is full of trials and challenges. Sometimes you hit your mark, sometimes you don’t. But with the support of the people around you, you can find the strength to move on.

But on the following day, Tuesday, October 22, 2018, things took a turn. It was the team’s first game of the day – this time against the School of Engineering (SOE). Tensions were high and spirits threatened to waiver as the SOE smashed the first set. Still, we tried to show our support by chanting “Let’s go SHS!” In the end, the SOE bested them in the second set and bagged the game. Thus ended the SHS team’s winning streak.
